Description
Cedar Siding Replacement with James Hardie Cedarmill & Rot Repair in Vancouver, WA 98682
Elite Home Exteriors NW completed this full siding replacement project at 13312 NE 71st St in Vancouver, WA 98682, where the home’s old cedar siding had deteriorated and begun to rot from years of Pacific Northwest weather exposure.
The project included complete removal of the aging and rotting cedar siding, inspection of the exposed wall system, rot repair, installation of a modern drainable weather barrier and membrane flashing system, new pre-primed James Hardie fiber cement siding and trim, and a complete Sherwin-Williams exterior paint finish.
As a local Vancouver WA siding contractor, our goal isn’t simply to cover an aging exterior with new siding. We remove the existing siding so the underlying wall assembly can be inspected and moisture-related problems can be addressed before the new siding system is installed.
Removing the Old Rotting Cedar Siding
The first step was the complete removal of the home’s old cedar siding.
Cedar can provide a beautiful exterior, but after years of exposure to Vancouver’s wet climate, wood siding can absorb moisture, deteriorate, split, and eventually develop rot—particularly around windows, doors, penetrations, siding transitions, and other areas where water can enter the wall system.
On this home, the existing cedar siding had reached the point where a full siding replacement was the appropriate long-term solution.
Removing the cedar allowed us to expose and inspect the underlying wall system rather than simply installing new materials over existing problems.
Finding & Repairing Rot Behind the Cedar Siding
Once the old cedar siding was removed, we were able to identify areas of hidden rot and moisture-related deterioration that needed attention before the new siding system could be installed.
Damaged materials were removed and repaired as necessary to restore a sound substrate for the new exterior system.
This is one of the major benefits of a complete tear-off siding replacement. Problems hidden behind old siding can be properly identified and corrected rather than being concealed beneath new materials.

Benjamin Obdyke HydroGap Drainable Weather Barrier
After completing the rot repairs and preparing the walls, we installed Benjamin Obdyke HydroGap® Drainable Weather Barrier across the exterior.
HydroGap provides a dedicated drainage space behind the siding, helping water that gets behind the exterior cladding drain down and away from the wall assembly.
This is particularly valuable for homes throughout Vancouver and Clark County, Washington, where frequent rain and wind-driven moisture make proper drainage behind the siding an important part of exterior construction.
HydroFlash Membrane Around Windows, Doors & Critical Areas
We incorporated the Benjamin Obdyke HydroFlash® Membrane System around windows, doors, penetrations, and other vulnerable transition areas.
Rather than relying solely on siding and caulking to keep water out, a properly designed exterior system uses flashing to direct water back onto the drainage plane and away from the structure.
The HydroFlash membrane was carefully integrated with the HydroGap weather barrier to create a continuous moisture-management system behind the new James Hardie siding.
Z-Metal & Individual Joint Flashing
Additional water-management details included Z-metal flashing at required horizontal transitions and individual joint flashing behind the James Hardie lap siding butt joints.
These components are mostly hidden once the siding project is complete, but they’re an important part of the finished wall assembly.
Proper flashing is one reason homeowners should consider more than the siding product itself when comparing siding replacement estimates. What goes behind the siding can have a major impact on the long-term performance of the exterior.
Pre-Primed James Hardie Cedarmill Lap Siding – 7-Inch Reveal
With the new moisture-management system installed, we upgraded the home from deteriorated cedar siding to pre-primed James Hardie Cedarmill lap siding.
We installed 8.25-inch HardiePlank boards with a 7-inch reveal, creating the traditional horizontal appearance of wood lap siding while upgrading the exterior to durable fiber cement.
The Cedarmill texture was an excellent choice for this project because it maintains a wood-grain appearance that complements the character of the original cedar exterior without requiring the same maintenance associated with natural wood siding.

James Hardie Rustic 5/4×4 Trim
We complemented the Cedarmill lap siding with pre-primed James Hardie Rustic 5/4×4 trim.
Hardie trim was installed at appropriate corners, windows, doors, and architectural areas to provide a substantial finished appearance while maintaining the durability of a fiber cement exterior.
Replacing aging wood siding and trim with James Hardie products also reduces the amount of exposed exterior wood that can become vulnerable to future moisture deterioration.
Hot-Dipped Galvanized Fasteners
The siding and trim system was installed using hot-dipped galvanized nails designed for exterior applications.
Correct fastening is an important component of a professional James Hardie installation. Fastener type, placement, penetration, siding exposure, clearances, and installation technique all contribute to the long-term performance of the finished exterior.
OSI QUAD MAX Caulking
Exterior joints and required transition areas were sealed using OSI QUAD MAX caulking.
High-quality exterior sealant provides flexibility and protection at appropriate transitions while the primary moisture protection comes from the correctly installed flashing and weather-resistant barrier behind the siding.
Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Exterior Finish
The pre-primed James Hardie siding and trim were finished with Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint®.
The field-applied paint system provided the home’s finished color while adding another protective layer to the new fiber cement exterior.
From Rotting Cedar to a Complete James Hardie Exterior System
This Vancouver project wasn’t simply a cosmetic siding upgrade.
The home went from aging, rotting cedar siding to a complete James Hardie fiber cement exterior backed by modern drainage, flashing, and moisture-management components.
